Goutis Estate Olive Oil

Greece has a looooong history with olive oil dating back thousands of years, but much of the accolades and acclaim of the past few decades have been showered on Italian, Spanish and French oils. After tasting this oil from Goutis Estate near the village of Kallithea, I think things are finally starting to change.

This particular extra virgin olive oil (named Bitter Grey for some poetic reason, I’m sure) is made from the pressing of one type of olive only: the local variety Nemoutiana-Horaitiki. The oil is a roller coaster of flavor that you’ll want to ride again and again. It starts out smooth and buttery, then the bitterness builds to a punch before dropping you into a finish of bright, sharp black pepper notes. Wonderfully wild and complex.
